We do not leave Hamra is an installation in which one component is an image advertised on a billboard on the corner of Hamra and Sadat street, and another is the accompanying text published in the project’s catalogue. This work proposes that although we enter Hamra street, we probably never leave.
In 2000, Ashkal Alwan invited a group of artists to create writings, video, photography and installations on Hamra Street and explore its image as one of Beirut's busiest and renowned thoroughfares. Works were screened and exhibited at the Hamra, Strand and Colisée cinemas as well as on Sadat Street. Participating Artists: Bilal Khbeiz, Jalal Toufic, Nadine Rachid Laure Touma, Tony Chakar, Walid Sadek, Akram Zaatari, Ghassan Salhab, Lamia Joreige, Mahmoud Hojeij, Rita Awn, Salah Saouli, Nesrine Khodr, Rabih Mroue and Feyrouz Serhal
